Iron levels, along with reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) oxidative stress markers, were quantified using specific assay kits—an iron assay kit, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay kit, a malondialdehyde (MDA) assay kit, and a 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) assay kit, respectively. Internet gaming's widespread adoption by young adults (11-35) today necessitates a more extensive study into its impact on their mental health. A paucity of research has explored the connection between Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and suicidal behavior in this population segment, although the well-documented mental health ramifications of IGD are acknowledged risk indicators for suicidal ideation and actions. Through this paper, we aim to discover if a relationship exists between IGD and suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and suicide attempts in the younger generation. In February of 2019, an online survey of significant scale was undertaken to explore the world of internet gaming in Hong Kong. Participants were recruited via purposive sampling, resulting in a total of 3430 respondents. For each suicidal behavior, multiple logistic regression analyses were performed on study samples, separated into distinct age groups. Statistical analyses, accounting for sociodemographic characteristics, internet use, self-reported bullying behaviors (perpetration and victimization), social withdrawal, and self-reported mental health conditions such as depression and psychosis, demonstrated a greater prevalence of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and suicide attempts among adolescent (11-17 years old) video game enthusiasts with IGD compared to those without. These associations lacked validity within the group of gamers aged 18 to 35. Studies point to the advisability of considering IGD a developing public mental health priority for the young population, particularly adolescents. Suicide prevention efforts can be strengthened through the implementation of IGD screenings for adolescents; these programs can then be broadened to incorporate online gaming platforms, targeting a more diverse population of vulnerable individuals.
